This is the first significant election where early voting is occurring in Eunice and the results are encouraging, according to Cheryl Milburn, St. Landry Parish registrar of voters.
“I know since I’ve been registrar we never had that many people in one day,” she said.
There were 777 early votes cast on Tuesday, the first day of early voting for the Nov. 6 election. There were 100 votes cast at the poll in the Eunice Municipal Complex on Tuesday.
“I got two phone calls from residents who thanked me for getting that office set up in Eunice,” she said.
Milburn attributed the increased early voting to the voting occurring in Eunice.
The municipal election in Eunice is helping drive turnout at the Eunice poll, she said.
The poll at Eunice was done especially for older voters, she said. Previously, Eunice voters had to go to the Opelousas to cast early votes.
Milburn, Clerk of Court Charles Jagneaux and state election officials set up the satellite early voting site in Eunice.
“We would sometimes have more persons from Eunice come here to early voting than locally around here,” she said of the early voting poll at the courthouse in Opelousas.
According to the Secretary of State’s website, there are 6,215 people registered to vote in the Eunice muncipal election.
