GRAND COTEAU – St. Edmund controlled the game from the opening tip as the Lady Blue Jays cruised to a 57-5 romp over the Academy of the Sacred Heart of Grand Coteau.
The Lady Jays grabbed a 12-0 first quarter lead, begun on put-back buckets by Rebecca Benoit and Savannah DeVillier.
Kinsley Marcantel then scored four straight points as St. Ed’s led, 8-0 midway through the first quarter.
DeVillier pushed in a shot on an inbound’s pass and Tanzy Miller hit a jumper in the closing seconds to push the Lady Jays ahead, 12-0.
Marcantel opened the second period scoring with two free throws with 6:06 remaining in the half.
Jill Simpson added two lay-ups and Marcantel scored off a steal as the Lady Jays moved ahead, 20-0 with 4:38 left in the period.
Miller scored on a three-point play and Mary Beth Lafleur followed with four free throws as SEH increased its margin to 27-0.
Kennedy Fruge added a free throw and Greta Miller pushed in a lay-up after a steal in the final minute as the Lady Jays took a 30-0 advantage into the locker room.
St. Edmund continued its domination over the youthful Saints early in the third frame as Lafleur drilled a pair of treys and added a fast-break bucket as the Lady Jays pushed ahead, 38-0 with 5:10 left in the period.
ASH’s Milley Frey then hit a jumper for the Saints’ first points of the game.
The Lady Jays answered with buckets by DeVillier, Hannah Benoit and Miller for a 44-2 margin.
After a free throw by Miller, Saints’ Frey drilled a three-pointer to close the gap to 45-5 with 2:29 left in the third quarter.
The Lady Jays responded as Hannah Benoit hit a jumper and Miller put in a lay-up as St. Edmund took a 49-5 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Lady Jays closed the game with an 8-0 run, sparked by four points from Tanzy Miller and three points by Greta Miller along with a free throw from Hannah Benoit.
Lafleur and Tanzy Miller led the Lady Jays with 12 points each, while Marcantel chipped in 10 points.
Greta Miller added seven points, DeVillier contributed six points and Hannah Benoit finished with five points.
St. Edmund will take on Basile at 11 a.m. Monday in the opening day of the annual Turkey Tournament held at Sacred Heart of Ville Platte.
