St. Landry Parish residents looking for a little extra cash to spend during the holidays may want to pay attention to the unclaimed property list printed on Pages 9 and 10 in The Eunice News today.
Unclaimed property is cash, stocks, bonds, securities and insurance proceeds unclaimed by its owner, which businesses turn over each year to the Louisiana Department of the Treasury. The money basically has become lost through the normal course of business through no fault of the owner.
According to the state Department of the Treasury, unclaimed property refunds range anywhere from $10 to $1,500 and are mailed to owners of the unclaimed property.
In some instances the treasury department may not have an updated mailing address for an individual. For that reason, to determine if someone has unclaimed property it is imperative to review the list of individuals who are owed money published today.
To retrieve unclaimed property, an individual must contact the Department of the Treasury at 888-925-4127 and provide them with an easy to read copy of the owner’s driver’s license and possibly other information that will positively identify a person as the rightful owner.
Individuals who have more than $1,500 of unclaimed property will be contacted by the Department of the Treasury to start the claims process to receive their money.
