Bertha Lee "Leigh" Young Krueger

    Bertha Lee “Leigh” Young Krueger, 78, passed away on December 28, 2018 at Monroe County Regional Hospital in Tompkinsville, KY.
    She was born in St. Landry Parish, Louisiana on January 18, 1940 to Walter and Amanthe Courville Young. She married Dale Shallenberger on September 5, 1958, and moved to Paxton, Illinois. He preceded her in death in 1979. She married Ervin Rudolph Krueger on June 26, 1981 in Champaign, IL, and they have resided in the community of Hestand, Kentucky for the past 30 years.
    Leigh was preceded in death by her parents and her sisters, Verdie Young Schambaugh and Verby Young Schambaugh, and nephews Kenneth Allen Schambaugh and Charles Walter Schambaugh.
    She is survived by her sister, Dorothy “Dottie” Young Johnson of Hammond, Louisiana and brother, James Young of Temecula, California.
    Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Ervin R. Krueger, as well as four children: Janice (Thomas) Shelmerdine of Greensboro, NC, Diana Risselmann of Granger, IN, Lisa (Bill) Mark of Glen Allen, VA, and Gary (Christy) Shallenberger of Champaign, IL, and three stepchildren: Stephanie (Clarence) Collins of London, KY, Jeffrey Krueger of Tompkinsville, KY, and Heather (Michael) Manint of Downs, IL.
    Additional surviving family are grandchildren: Lauren & Anne Shelmerdine, Valerie, Nicole, & Joseph Risselmann, Jr., William & Adelina Mark, Mitchell Shallenberger, Samantha (Doug) Wells, Kaitlin Webb, Zachary (Suzanne) Krueger, Mason, Madison, & Matthew Manint, and great-grandchildren Kallie Burns, Wyatt Wells, and Whitley Krueger.
    Leigh will be remembered fondly as an amazing cook, gardener, canner, seamstress and for her love of hummingbirds. She dearly loved her family, home state of Louisiana, and her Cajun roots. We will miss her dearly.
    Visitation will be held Friday, January 4, 2019 from 12:00pm-2:00pm at Strode Funeral Home in Tompkinsville, KY, with a memorial service at 2:00pm. Entombment will follow at Monroe County Memorial Lawn.
    In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
