Arrest made in shooting

Second person wanted for questioning; Eunice man wounded in Sunday incident

Eunice Police have been peppered with reports of shootings and it wasn’t until Sunday that someone was wounded.
A 32-year-old Eunice man was in critical condition after being shot multiple times in the 600 block of Faris Street on Sunday, according to Eunice Police Chief Randy Fontenot.
Fontenot said police have not yet talked with the victim, who is at an out-of-town hospital.
In a separate shooting that occurred about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in the 300 block of South Mallet, Eunice Police announced the arrest of S-Zbor Veal, 18, of Old Spanish Road, Opelousas.
Veal was arrested by Opelousas Police on warrants for charges of resisting, illegal possession of a firearm, a felon in possession of a firearm and a seat belt violation.
Eunice Police have placed a detainer on Veal for his involvement in the Tuesday morning shooting.
Police also are searching for Darius Bazile, 22 of Baton Rouge. Bazile is wanted for questioning in his suspected involvement in Eunice shootings. He is also wanted on bench warrants out of St. Landry Parish for possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and bond forfeiture.
Police are asking that anyone with information on his whereabouts or any other crime, to call Eunice Police at 337-457-2626 or Crime Stoppers at 337-948-TIPS or on the P3 app at p3tips.com.
At Tuesday’s city council meeting, Fontenot noted there has been a number of shootings in the city, but police were just then developing enough evidence to make arrests.
Police at first we thought there “quite a few shooters involved,” but now think “we have less than a dozen shooters total that are causing all the havoc in the city,” Fontenot said.
Police have seized two vehicles believed to have been used in shootings, he said.
State Police, St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s deputies and other outside agencies are assisting in the investigation and execution of warrants, he said.
Eunice Police have been doing extra patrols that include officers on foot and police units patroling at night with their lights off.
A key to gathering evidence has been information from the public, he said.
Sunday’s shooting that wounded the man occurred about 11 a.m. at Nimitz and Faris.
Fontenot believes the shootings are related and linked to a feud probably tied to drugs.
About about 8:30 p.m. Monday shooters in vehicles behind the Chevron station on La. 13 exchanged gunfire over an open field, he said.
A black Charger thought to be involved in that shooting has been seized.
At about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday a shooting occurred with multiple shots fired in the 300 block of South Mallet.
Fontenot at first reported investigators believe the shots from a vehicle targeted a victim who was on foot and fled the scene.
Investigators have not identified the person targeted or found him, he said.
But by mid-morning Wednesday another version of the event is that there was an exchange of shots. The Chevrolet Impala believed to be involved in the shooting has been seized.
“We still need the public’s help with whatever information they may have. The only way we can do this is with the assistance of the public,” Fontenot said.
