St. Landry-Evangeline United Way to allocate $62,625 for food, shelter

St. Landry-Evangeline United Way will oversee distribution of federal funds made available through the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
St. Landry Parish will be awarded $46,425 and Evangeline Parish will be awarded $16,200.
The funds are to be used by eligible local service agencies to supplement and expand the capacity of existing emergency food and shelter programs in St. Landry and Evangeline parish. Funds are not to be used for creating new programs.
Each local board for Emergency Food and Shelter Programs, consist of representatives from voluntary, governmental, and religious sectors who will determine how to allocate the awards among local eligible emergency food and shelter programs.
Under the terms of the grant from the national EFSP board, local agencies selected to receive funds must: be private voluntary non-profits or units of government, be eligible to receive Federal funds, have an accounting system, practice nondiscrimination, have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs, and if they are a private voluntary organization, have a voluntary board.
According to Ginger LeCompte, executive director of the United Way, “This is a program that we find very gratifying to be part of because we know the funds go directly toward the citizens in need.”
Eligible organizations interested in applying for Emergency Food and Shelter Program funds can contact St. Landry-Evangeline United Way for applications or more information. The deadline for applications to be received is July 31.
