For veterans: ‘Best Going Away Possible’

“Best Going Away Possible” is the slogan that inspired two Vietnam War veterans to begin a project that would give veterans one final moment of honor.
In 2015 the late Harvey Darbonne, then post commander of American Legion Post 514, and Lincoln “Link” Savoie, retired U.S. Army criminal investigator, began plans for what is today the first St. Landry Parish Honor Guard.
The project began with presentations to area town councils and organizations for support and donations.
“Darbonne impressed upon any one who would listen, the necessity of having a local honor guard underscoring the belief every vet should be buried with dignity,” Savoie said.
After years of accepting donations; uniforms, seven weapons, and a bugle were purchased. Following the untimely death of Darbonne, Savoie continued the work as coordinator; ensuring weekly training sessions, while recruiting and managing operations.
‘We train each week because at any given moment, one or more of 5,500 St. Landry Parish vets may need our service,” Savoie said.
Training was originally conducted under the watchful eye of Sgt. Lauren Lewis, a highly trained, no-nonsense professional schooled in honor guard procedures. When Lewis left for a new position, Col. Claude Clifton took over as instructor. The guard plans several sessions at a local firing range where skills will be perfected and members will then be fully prepared to conduct funerals.
The guard will only participate in funerals for St. Landry Parish vets, so it is hoped that honor guards will eventually develop in every parish. “We encourage parish leaders in this endeavor, as all vets deserve a ‘Best going away possible,’” Savoie said.
