Total sales tax collections in St. Landry Parish in January rose 16% over the January 2019, according to statistics released by the St. Landry Parish School Board Sales Tax Division.
St. Landry Parish total sales tax collections in January were $8,146,901, up $1,127,780 over the January 2019 collections.
That’s probably a record for parish sales tax collections in January.
The parish sales and use tax total includes collections for the parish government, School Board, solid waste, law enforcement, special tax districts and municipalities.
There are 18 parish entities collecting sales taxes in St. Landry Parish.
From December 2019 to January, total sales collections jumped nearly 44% — $2,484,079. Total collections in December 2019 were $5,662,822.
Sales tax collections in Eunice were up 15.7% — $85,377 — to $629,240 in January. The increase probably can be attributed to the addition of a 0.25% tax for public safety pay increases. Collection of the public safety tax began in October 2019.
Eunice sales tax collections were up $199,309 in January over December 2019’s total of $429,931.
In Opelousas, January’s total collections were $1,093,121, up $31,796 or 3% over the January 2019 collections.
Opelousas total collections were up nearly 54% — $382,558 — in January over the December 2019 total collections of $710,563.
In Road District 1, which collects a 2 percent sales tax in unincorporated areas of the parish to fund the Smooth Ride Home program, collections totaled $857,424 in January, up 38% or $237,050 from the January 2019 total of $620,374.
The road district’s sales tax collection in January was up a whopping $406,633 or 90% over the $450,980 collected in December 2019.
The local sales tax rates in Eunice are 2.45 percent city and 3.55 percent parish.
Local sales tax rates in unincorporated St. Landry Parish are 5.55 percent parish tax rates that includes the 2 percent Smooth Ride Home Program tax.
The sales tax numbers include a use tax, which is paid on items used, stored or consumed. The sales tax is collected on a transaction.
The numbers reported for January collections primarily reflect sales in December.
