A St. Landry Parish School Board special meeting was marked more by how the meeting was conducted than what happened.
The chairs were spaced with social distance in mind and a projection screen with two Board members on it were signs of the coronavirus impact on a public meeting.
Board members Mary Ellen Donatto and Joyce Haynes attended the meeting through an internet link.
The meeting was special called, but even with that it is rare the chairs were not occupied by a least a few people.
Board members Randy Wagley and Albert Hayes Jr. were absent for the special meeting Wednesday at the Resource Center.
The meeting was held to decide on emergency documents that would give Superintendent Patrick Jenkins authority to act without consulting the Board.
While the emergency powers were granted, Jenkins assured Board members they would be consulted.
A resolution references distance learning for students sent home as the coronavirus — COVID-19 — threatens.
The school district will not launch distance learning, Jenkins said. The issues, such as providing learning plans for special education students, are too numerous, he said.
Jenkins said distance learning at this point presents significant confusion and hardship for the district.
At Jenkins recommendation, the Board members agreed the school district should maintain its calendar, which means classes are to resume on April 20.
Gov. John Bel Edwards’ proclamation stated students would return April 13, but that week is spring break on the school calendar.
The emergency provisions allow providing meals to students, distance learning and contracts under the superintendent’s authority.
The Board did agree to pay custodial, cafeteria and bus drivers up to time and half for working during the emergency.
The feeding program will continue, Jenkins said.
A report sent Friday shows 1,675 meals served Monday and 2,500 on Wednesday.
“Obviously there is a need in the parish,” Jenkins said of the meals.
Primary meal sites are Central Middle in Eunice, Lawtell Elementary and Opelousas Junior High.
The meals are prepared for off-site consumption.
