No matter what the outcome of the LHSAA Class 4-A playoff game is on Friday, Eunice head boys basketball coach Chad Andrepont will be pleased with the Bobcats’ turnaround season.
No. 17 Eunice Bobcats visit No. 16 Cecilia (13-13) for a Class 4-A bi-district battle.
The Bobcats struggled to a 2-21 finish in 2020 but won 13 games this season.
“I was glad to see the growth from last year to this year,” Andrepont said. “It was an impressive turnaround.
“They worked really hard had great attitudes even when they weren’t winning,” the coach said. “They kept working hard and that carried over to this season.”
The Bobcats (13-8) are led this season by seniors Shaun Hudson, Kevin Thomas, Simeon Ardoin, Treylon Cooper, Fred Guillory and Bryson Poullard.
Juniors Dedric Vigers and Terrance Shilow are also key contributors this season.
“The junior and senior group grew up together over the last couple of seasons,” Andrepont said. “That experience showed this season.
“I know Cecilia will be ready for us,” the coach said. “They are very athletic and have a really good shooter – I expect to get their best effort.
“With a 16-17 match up, on paper it is supposed to be the most competitive game on the bracket.
“I think it is a game we will can be competitive if we do what we are supposed to do,” Andrepont said. “We have a chance to be successful even on the road.”
The in 2019 Class 3-A playoffs, No. 29 Eunice fell 98-58 at No. 4 Madison Prep.
“We had a few guys on the team then,” the coach said. “It helps that they have experienced that type of environment.”
In a Div. IV regional round contest, No. 13 St. Edmund (15-12) was set to No. 4 Southern Lab (18-9).
Southern Lab had to forfeit the game so the Jays will play the winner between No. 5 Metairie Park Country Day and No. 12 Westminster Christian Academy next in the quarterfinals.
The No. 13 seed is the highest ranking in school history since the current power ranking structure began in 2008.
“We started out pretty solid and then we fell into a slump,” St. Edmund head coach Nick Trosclair said of the Jays. “But we finished strong at the end.
“I knew we were going to face a strong team in the playoffs unless you finish the season as one of the top four teams,” Trosclair said. “We won’t back down. I know my guys are going to fight hard and battle start to finish.”
St. Edmund is led by seniors Henry Brown, Alex Fontenot, Luke Trahan and Easten Coleman along with junior Ian Dupre and sophomore Kieran Davis.
“Our goal was to a have a 20-win season,” the coach said. “With five cancellations and dropping a couple we should have won, I think we would have gotten there.”
In Class 3-A, No. 25 Iota (16-8) visits No. 8 Booker T. Washington in New Orleans (13-8).
