CROWLEY – Notre Dame handed St. Edmund all they wanted as the Lady Pioneers rolled to a 11-0 win over the Lady Jays.
St. Ed’s threatened in the first inning as Mary Beth Lafleur singled and Jenna Smith doubled but neither could score.
Notre Dame’s offensive firepower was evident from the beginning as Abigail Savoy reached on an error and then Corine Poncho and Callie Maitre followed with back-to-back home runs.
Smith doubled again in the third inning but was letft stranded.
The Lady Pios exploded for five runs in the bottom of the frame, begun when Maci Bergeron tripled and Savoy belted a home run over the right field fence.
Poncho singled and Maitre hit her second home run of the contest to push Notre Dame ahead, 7-0.
Macey Freed walked and later courtesy runner Ellie Bourgeois scored when Caylyn Henry reached on a throwing error.
The Lady Jays had another chance to avoid the shutout when Anna Chapman singled in the top of the fourth but couldn’t advance.
Notre Dame sealed the mercy-rule win with three runs in the fifth as Henry reached on an error, Maddie Murrell walked and Maci Bergeron ended the game with a home run over the left field fence.
The Lady Pios set the new national record of 83 home runs in last week’s win over Erath.
The previous 82-home run record was set in 2017 by Canyon High School in Texas.
Notre Dame broke the state record for home runs in a single season earlier this year when it surpassed the old record of 59 set by St. Amant in 2007.
With a week left in the regular season, Notre Dame is the top team in the Div. III power rankings, while the Lady Jays are No. 5 in the Div. IV power rankings.
St. Edmund will face Teurlings Catholic and E.D. White in a select team tournament set for 4 p.m. on Friday at St. Julian Park in Broussard.
The Lady Jays entertain Ville Platte at 8 a.m. Saturday.
