According to St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby J. Guidroz, “On Jan. 11, 2024, just before 6 p.m, St. Landy Parish Sheriff’s Office received a call from a victim advising that his brother Christopher Vidrine had shot him in his hand on Muscadine Road in the Sunset area.”
Sheriff’s deputies attempted to talk to Vidrine when he barricaded himself in his home. The sheriff’s SWAT team along with negotiators arrived at the scene. At 8:20 p.m., after negotiations failed, the SWAT team took the suspect into custody by using less lethal force. Vidrine was attended by EMT’s but refused aid. He was released with no injuries and taken to the parish jail for booking.
The investigation revealed that Vidrine had been drinking all day when another family member asked the brother to go and check on him. The brother stated that Vidrine became irate and began fighting with him, stating he was going to kill him several times. After several arguments and physical altercations, the brother stated he began removing firearms from the home when Vidrine became upset again. The brother then pushed Vidrine away and walked to his vehicle to retrieve his cellphone to call the sheriff’s office for help. Vidrine then came out of the house and began to chase him with a small caliber rifle and shot him in the hand. Vidrine continued to chase the brother around his vehicle and was aiming towards his head. The brother was able to duck behind the vehicle and used pepper spray on Vidrine. Vidrine then went into the home, which gave the brother time to escape to a neighbor’s home and call for help.
The victim was treated and later released from a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Guidroz thanked the District 3 Fire Department, Med Express, and the Grand Coteau Police Department for their assistance in this case.
Christopher Vidrine, 34, of the 800 block of Muscadine Road, Sunset, was charged with attempted second-degree murder. No bail has been set.
