A 25-year-old Eunice man died after the electric scooter he was driving was struck by a SUV on La. 13 near Townhome Drive in a hit-and-run.
Eunice Police Chief Kyle LeBouef said police were dispatched at 5:26 p.m. Friday where they found male victim Darius Edwards, of Eunice, lying on the roadway unresponsive with bystanders performing CPR.
Officers took over life-saving measures until Eunice Fire Department and EMS medics arrived on scene.
Witnesses told police Edwards was struck by a gray SUV that was headed south on La. 13 and passing vehicles in the center turn lane at a high rate of speed.
The witnesses also reported that Edwards was riding an electric motorized scooter traveling north in the center turn lane when the gray vehicle struck him.
The vehicle then stopped for about 10 to 15 seconds before fleeing the scene south on La. 13.
Edwards was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Due to physical evidence obtained at the scene, and tips received from anonymous sources, the vehicle and driver were later located. The driver was identified and taken into custody. The identity of the driver is being withheld pending further investigation.
Charges are pending, LeBouef stated.
LeBouef, in the news release issued Saturday morning, thanked the St Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office and the tipsters for their assistance in the investigation.
