Fire guts Ray’s Bakery, owner plans to reopen

A Sunday afternoon fire gutted Ray’s Bakery, but there are plans to restore and reopen the family-owned business.
The bakery is owned by Steven Oncale and is managed by Delana Oncale.
Eunice Fire Chief Chaise Brown, said, “The initial investigation and cause of the fire is pointing to an electrical.”
Louisiana State Fire Marshal responded to assist with investigation due it being a commercial property, Brown reported.
Eunice firefighters were called to the scene at 931 E. Laurel Ave. at 2:59 p.m. and were assisted by firefighters from Fire District 6, Acadia Fire District 4, and St. Landry Fire District 3.
There was no one inside the building at the time of the fire. No injuries were reported.
Delana Oncale said the bakery was opened Tuesday through Sunday, from 6 a.m. until 2 p.m. The bakery was opened on most holidays with the exception of Christmas and New Years.
“We were baking and working on King Cakes Sunday. We closed at 2 p.m. Sunday,” she said.
Delana, who has worked at the bakery for the past 33 years, said it employs 11 people.
Firefighters had the blaze under control in about hour, Brown said.
The adjacent Pro Nail salon was damaged, he said.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the owners and occupants of Rays Bakery as well as Pro Nail’s salon,” Brown stated in a social media posting.
