Irene was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Didier Lafond and granddaughter of Inez LeDoux Andrepont of Eunice.
She attended and graduated from Eunice High School in 1947. She then attended Charity Hospital School of Nursing and became a Registered Nurse in 1950. Irene served as a public health nurse for the State of Louisiana for more than 25 years. She enjoyed her job, and those who knew her agree it was a perfect fit because Irene always sought to be of service to others. She ended her career as a supervisor of nurses.
While Irene was in nursing school, she began dating George Ray Stagg, Jr., of Eunice. They married on June 4, 1950 and were blessed with six children: Michael, Deborah, Thomas, William, John, and Mary Catherine. Deborah passed away in 1963 shortly before George in 1972. Irene's spirit of perseverance and steadfast faith allowed her to be a wonderful mother under difficult circumstances.
Not only was Irene devoted to her family but also to her community. She counseled widows. It was not unusual for women who had lost their husbands to go to Irene, even in her younger years. Irene believed wholeheartedly in the Catholic school system. All her children received an education from St. Edmund's Catholic School in Eunice, and Irene served on the school board for many years. In the early 1980s she was honored for her service to the school community as Parade Marshall for St. Edmond's Catholic School Homecoming. Irene was an active parishioner at St. Anthony of Padua's Catholic Church for over 50 years.
Irene's 13 grandchildren brought her great joy. She always provided a listening ear, lots of love, and wonderful cooking. Irene was a loving, wife, mother, grandmother, nurse, friend, mentor, and role model to all. Irene was always rooting for others, whether it be her children, her grandchildren, or her favorite sports teams. Amongst her family and friends, she was known for trying to take care of everyone. She was a woman of faith, and God was always at the center of her life. Even in her final weeks, she was found with her rosary in hand.
Irene cared for her mother during her final years before moving to Tulsa, OK in 2005. She lived in Town Village Retirement Home in Tulsa where she was extremely active, serving as Town Village Mayor, ambassador, and friend to all. She enjoyed playing cards with her friends and attending social events.
Irene is survived by five children, Michael Stagg of Lafayette, LA, Tommy Stagg of Charlotte, NC, Billy Stagg and his wife Lori of Lafayette, LA, John Stagg and his wife Jackie of Tulsa, OK, and Cathy Steele and her husband Mark of Gravette, AR; 13 grandchildren, Justin Stagg, Spencer Stagg, Will Stagg, Jacob Stagg, Jordan Stagg, Lily Stagg, Christian Stagg, Sarah Stagg, Josh Steele, Jack Stagg, Zach Steele, Anne Marie Stagg, Steven Stagg; 3 great grandchildren, Gracie Stagg, Royce Stagg, and Lucas Stagg.
