EUNICE–A private funeral service for Martin Lee Chevis, 59, will be held on Saturday, July 31, 2021, at St. Mathilda Catholic Church in Eunice. A public visitation will be observed from 8 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. at Owens-Thomas Funeral Home in Eunice. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Eunice.Father Hampton Davis will officiate the funeral mass.
Martin Lee Chevis was born June 5, 1962 to the late Rose Mae Fusilier and Ivory Chevis, Sr. On July 20, 2021, he slipped away from time to eternity at 12:24 pm. Martin was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, son-in-law, cousin, and friend, known to his family and friends as “Chevis”.
Martin was baptized into the Catholic faith at Christ the King Catholic Church in Bellevue, LA. where he received his first holy communion and sacrament of confirmation.
He received his formal education in St. Landry Parish Schools and was a graduate of Sunset High School. Martin moved to the city of Eunice in 1982 and was hired as a police officer on May 24, 1982.
During his law enforcement career, he served as patrol officer, detective, and as a supervisor in both the patrol and detective divisions and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in 1997. He also served shortly as a probation officer for the Eunice City Court during his tenure in law enforcement.
In 2002, Martin retired from the Eunice Police Department after twenty years of service and worked for a period at Opelousas General Hospital as a respiratory therapist technician. For the past 15 years, he was employed as a plant operator for Ethos Entergy in Pace, Florida.
Martin enjoyed traveling, working out at the gym, and spending time with both his Chevis and Reed families.
Martin was preceded in death by his parents, Ivory Chevis, Sr. and Rose Mae Fusilier; three brothers: John Floyd, Mervin and Erwin Chevis.
Martin will forever live in the hearts of his wife, Shameca Reed Chevis; his children, Saja Chevis of Eunice, Brandon Dixon, Beaumont, Texas, Allen Watts (step-son) of Eunice, three sisters, Emily Chevis of Houston, Texas, Shirley Chevis of Bellevue, LA, Sybil Guillory of Lake Charles, three brothers, Ivory Chevis, Jr. and Edward Chevis both of Bellevue, LA, Anthony Chevis of Opelousas, two grandchildren, Arlee-Ana Chevis and Cameron Ducote, two godchildren, Rhonda Bilbo and Lynsey Joseph, and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.
Owens-Thomas Funeral Home of Eunice is in charge of arrangements.
