Roland Lee “Poppee” Ortego passed away on Monday, September 3, 2018, at the age of 93 in the comfort of his home surrounded by family.
A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, September 5, 2018, at 10:00 AM. at St. Augustine Church in Basile. Burial will follow at Reed Cemetery in Tee Mamou. Deacon Gary Gaudin will officiate.
At the request of the family visitation will begin on Tuesday, September 4, 2018 at 10:00 AM until 10:00 PM at Quirk and Son Funeral Home in Basile and will reopen on Wednesday at 8:00 AM until time of services. A rosary will be prayed on Tuesday, September 4, 2018 at 7:00PM.
He leaves behind a wife of 74 years, Francis Racie Doucet Ortego, his son James Roland Ortego of Eunice, five grandchildren; Kevin (Lora) Ortego of Basile, Monica (Tony) LaFleur of Basile, William (Bridget) Ortego of Eunice, David (Victoria) of Basile, Christopher Ortego and special friend Rachel Wilson of Opelousas, daughter-in-law, Frances Ortego of Basile, five great grandchildren; John (Bethany) Ortego of Eunice, Sarah (Stephan) Smith of Baton Rouge, Mathew, Ty and Richlynn Lafleur of Basile, two sisters; Priscilla Courville of Lake Charles and Freda Audas of Lake Charles.
After retiring from the oilfield industry, he worked 11 years for the Town of Basile.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing and also shrimping with his sons and grandsons.
Roland was preceded in death by his parents, Maurice Ortego and Pearl Hebert, one son, Kenneth Ortego, two sisters; Ruth Harper and Helen McKie, one brother, Walter A. Ortego, one daughter in law, Mary Ann Fuselier Ortego.
Quirk and Son Funeral Home in Eunice is in charge of the arrangements.
