SGTMAJ Merlin C. McManus, U.S.M.C. (Ret.) passed away on March 28, 2018 at the age of 92 years.
He was born in Eunice, LA and lived in Algiers since 1968. He was veteran of World War II and Vietnam. In World War II, he served with the Second Marine Corps Division in Saipan, Okinawa, and Nagasaki, Japan. He received the following commendations: Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with combat ā€œVā€, Combat Action Ribbon, Meritorious Unit Citation with 2 stars, Presidential Unit Citation, Vietnam Service Medal with 4 stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal with 1960 bar, Asiatic Pacific Medal with 2 stars, World War II Victory Medal, National Service Defense Medal with 1 star, Navy Occupation Service Medal (Japan). During the Vietnam War, he was awarded the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry Medal with palm and Good Conduct Medal with 1 silver and 2 bronze stars.
He was charter secretary, second year president and member of Fleet Reserve Association Branch 162 NOLA, a member of American Legion Post 218 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3121.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lela Mae LeBouef; second wife, Kelly Alexander McManus; parents, Dave M. and Alcie Young McManus; brothers, Hurley and Elby McManus; sisters, Eppie McManus Fruge, Joesie McManus Langley of Basile and Nada McManus of Eunice.
Survivors include: son, Wayne of Harvey, LA; daughter, Merlene Anderson of Cameron, NC; brother, Gardie of Eunice, LA; three grandsons: Kevin, Keith and Timothy; six great grandchildren: Christopher, Bishop, Kayla, Carolina, Conner & Collin along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Relatives, friends, members of FRA, VFW, and American Legion, were invited to attend visitation at Mothe Funeral Home, 2100 Westbank Expy., Harvey, LA on Thursday, April 5, 2018 from 10 AM to 1:30 PM. Services followed. Interment Westlawn Memorial Park.
