Parish sales tax revenue rose in July

St. Landry Parish sales tax collections posted a strong increase in July with the parish total hitting $45,171099, up 9.4% over the same period in 2019.
The July figures primarily reflect sales in June. The parish increase is attributed to the oil and gas industry, according to the report from the St. Landry Parish School Board’s tax division.
The parish sales and use tax total includes collections for the parish government, School Board, solid waste, law enforcement, special tax districts and municipalities.
The total doesn’t include state sales taxes.
There are 18 parish entities collecting sales taxes in St. Landry Parish.
In July, the parish collections totaled $7,878,371, up 33.7% over July 2019 and up 19.6% over collections in June.
In Eunice, year-to-date collections were $3,770,221, up $630,098 or 20% over the same period in 2019. July collections of $592,489 were up 38% or $162,814 from the July 2019 collections. Collections dropped from June’s $616,498.
In Opelousas, collections through July totaled $6,098,483, up $318,772 or 5.5% from the same period in 2019. The July collections totaled $967,036, up 15.4% from July 2019 and up 6.2% from June.
In Road District 1, which collects a 2% sales tax in unincorporated St. Landry Parish to fund the Smooth Ride Home Program, year-to-date collections were $4,560,579, up 16.7% or $654,086 from the January to July collections in 2019.
In July, the road district’s total was $1,005,609, up 76.9% from the July 2019 total and up 63.8% from the June total of $613,778.
The local sales tax rates in Eunice are 2.45% city and 3.55% parish.
Local sales tax rates in unincorporated St. Landry Parish are 5.55% parish tax rates that includes the 2% Smooth Ride Home Program tax.
The sales tax numbers include a use tax, which is paid on items used, stored or consumed. The sales tax is collected on a transaction.
