Universal Head Start starting for 2-year-olds would help produce productive citizens, said U.S. Rep. Cleo Fields at a town hall on Tuesday at the Eunice City Hall.
“When you hear about this bill, you will say, oh, Cleo, that costs too much. Same thing my colleagues say,” he said to a capacity crowd in the Eunice Council Chamber
“When we open up those spots for these little kids so that we can give them some type of formalized education real young when they get to the third grade they read on grade level, they do math. They got a head start in life. They don’t feel like they are behind and you know what happens? They don’t commit crimes they become productive citizens and they contribute to our society,” he said.
The cost to provide the early education should be weighed against the money spent on prisons.
“We’ve got to make Head Start universal. Give these kids a chance at life early. Now I’m going to work that bill a lot and hopefully, before I retire from Congress, we will have universal Head Start and then we will be closing down jails and prisons because it’s going to make the chief of police’s job easier,” he said.
