An investigation is under way on reports of a moved grave and missing tombstone at cemetery south of Eunice on the old Crowley highway.
The Acadia Parish Sheriff, Louisiana Cemetery Board and State Police are involved in the investigation.
Acadia Parish Sheriff K.P. Gibson said on Thursday his deputies were trying to determine if any laws had been broken.
On March 13, Lena Rougeau discovered an unknown grave in the spot where her son, Ray III, was buried, according to a report by KLFY.
She said the child’s tombstone had been placed on top of the grave of her other infant son, Quincy.
Three days later, Rougeau claimed that when she arrived at the cemetery she found the grave had been moved and the tombstone was missing
She also speculates her son is not buried there anymore.
Gibson says the biggest factor to find out in the investigation is the motive. That, he added, will help decide what, if any criminal charges will be filed.
According to the sheriff, if the grave was moved “under criminal intent.” charges for damage and/or theft may be warranted.
The same would apply to the missing tombstone, he said.
“If it was done in the aspects of error and so forth, it could en up in civil court,” Gibson said.
“I know I’ve read in different media sources of things that have occurred in different areas but it’s not something you deal with on consistent basis,” Gibson said.
