The driver of one of two vehicles that collided at the intersection of U.S. 190 and 3rd Street at about 5:15 p.m. Thursday was taken to Acadian Medical Center for treatment of what Eunice Police said were moderate injuries, Police Randy Fontenot said. Makayla Lejeune, 19, of Ville Platte was eastbound on U.S. 190 in a 2015 Ford Fusion when she went through a red light, Fontenot said. The Fusion struck a 2015 Chevrolet Malibu driven north on 3rd Street by Denise Sonnier, 58, of Basile, according to Fontenot. Sonnier reported a possible injury, but was not taken to the hospital and Lejeune was taken to Acadian Medical Center, he said. Air bags in both vehicles deployed. Both drivers said the light was green for them, but witnesses said Lejeune went through a red light, he said. Lejeune was cited for disobeying traffic controls. Fontenot said the incident pointed out the need for witnesses to come forward to assist in investigations. (Photo by Harlan Kirgan)
