An 18-year-old Lafayette man was indicted for second-degree murder in a Christmas party shooting in Eunice.
Rontreal J. Prejean, of the 400 block of Madison Street, Lafayette, was indicted Tuesday by a grand jury in the 27th Judicial District Court. He had been named earlier by Eunice Police.
Eunice Police had charged Prejean with first-degree murder and three counts of attempted first-degree murder.
A second-degree murder conviction carries a mandatory sentence of life imprisonment without the benefit of probation, parole or suspension of sentence, according to a news release from the District Attorney Earl Taylor.
At end of February, a second man, Darron Carter, 20, of the Lafayette area and associated with the Gremlin Gang of Vermilion Parish, was charged with first-degree murder and three counts of attempted first-degree murder.
Carter was located in Lafayette by officers with the Eunice Police, Lafayette Police and Louisiana State Police. He was taken into custody without incident.
Tyrie Frederick, 23, of Eunice died from multiple gunshots in the shooting that occurred at 1:20 a.m. Dec. 23 at the Southeast Neighborhood Center on City Avenue in Eunice.
According to Eunice Chief of Police, Randy Fontenot, the shooting occurred following an altercation during a Christmas party at the center. Prejean, a rapper, hired to entertain at the party allegedly pulled a handgun and began shooting at the victim, striking and killing him, Fontenot said in a news release.
Frederick was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Three others, 14- and 15-year-old males and a 22-year-old female, were also struck by bullets. They were all treated for non-life threatening injuries, Fontenot said.
