A 25-year-old Opelousas man has been arrested on a second-degree murder charge in connection with a shooting in Melville, according to a news release from Sheriff Bobby Guidroz.
But his court date was delayed because the suspect had to undergo surgery for a previous gunshot wound.
Bail was released on $50,000 for
Devonte L. Edwards, of the 1000 block of Prayer House Road, Opelousas, was released on $50,000 bail. He faces a May 28 date in the 27th District Court.
Guidroz said Melville Police Chief Anthony Moreau requested assistance on May 5 to investigate a shooting.
“When detectives arrived, they identified the suspect involved in the shooting as Devonta Edwards of Opelousas. Witnesses identified Edwards as the person that fired his weapon at Jeremy Rose.  Mr. Rose and Mr. Edwards’ wife were involved in a disturbance prior to Mr. Edwards shooting at Mr. Rose,” Guidroz stated.
Edwards left the scene prior to law enforcement’s arrival and was arrested with the help of the U.S. Marshal’s deputies and housed at the Lafayette Sheriff’s Office, he stated.
