A Eunice homeowner stopped the burglary of his pickup truck at about 6:30 a.m. Thursday, but was shot in the stomach and is in critical condition at a Lafayette hospital, Eunice Police Chief Randy Fontenot said.
The incident occurred in the 500 block of Juanita Street.
“It appears right now that it was an attempted car burglary,” Fontenot said.
A suspect or suspects drove up to the house and got of their vehicle, but were surprised by the homeowner, he said.
Three shots were fired, two hit the ground and a third passed through the vehicle door and struck the homeowner, he said.
The suspects fled in a compact light-color car, he said. The car was gray, beige or cream-colored, he added.
“We believe there may have been more than one suspect in the vehicle,” he said.
