A man who reported he was robbed and shot in Eunice actually asked to become a victim, Eunice Police Chief Randy Fontenot said.
On June 13 26-year-old Michael Rung told police he was shot in the chest during a robbery as he returned to his residence in the 200 block of Jelk at about 2 a.m.
According to the Fontenot, Rung said he was approached by a black male wearing a hoodie and dreds. The assailant, Rung told police, demanded everything he had and when he said he had nothing he was patted down and his wallet was taken.
After the wallet was taken, Rung told police the assailant shot him in the chest and fled.
Rung was taken to a Lafayette hospital with a wound from a .380-caliber pistol.
On Friday, Fontenot said Rung and his attacker, Jacob L. Jack, 27, of the 500 block of Fuselier Street, had been arrested.
There were discrepancies in the story immediately after the shooting that caused police to dig deeper, Fontenot said.
It was learned Rung was about to go to jail because he was behind in child support payments that were due that morning Fontenot said.
So, Rung conspired with Jacob to concoct the scheme about the robbery and shooting so Rung could avoid court and jail, he said.
Jacob is charged with criminal conspiracy, aggravated battery, illegal carrying of a weapon by a felon, obstruction of justice, filing false public records and perjuy.
Rung is charged with criminal conspiracy, inciting a felony, principal to aggravated battery, obstruction of justice, filing false public record and perjury.
Both were arrested on Friday.
