Sheriff, Crime Stoppers offer holiday safety tips

St. Landry Parish Crime Stoppers and Sheriff Bobby Guidroz offered holiday safety tips.
While we are enjoying the Christmas and New Year holidays, let’s keep in mind a few safety tips:
1. Pay attention to your surroundings; seeing trouble coming allows you to completely avoid it and warn others.
2. Use your cellphone wisely when entering and exiting your vehicle. Try to use earbuds or other hands-free devices.
3. If possible, try not to have your children with you while shopping, you could be distracted enough to allow thieves or predators to strike.
4. Avoid driving alone or at night. Always try to park in well-lighted areas.
5. Try to park as close to an entry/exit as possible. In very large or unfamiliar lots, try to remember where you parked.
6. Always lock your vehicle! Make sure all windows are rolled up. If your vehicle has an alarm, set it.
7. Do not leave packages, purses, makeup bags, electronics or valuables on the seat or in easy view within your vehicle. Place all items in your trunk or out of sight.
8. If you bring a purse or bag, never leave it in the shopping cart or on top of your vehicle. The moment you look away or get distracted, it will be stolen.
9. When you leave a store, put your vehicle keys or fob in your hand. Get ready to use the panic horn feature on your remote or your keys as a weapon if attacked.
10. Leave the parking lot after you have shopped or completed a transaction at the ATM. Criminals could approach and catch you off guard.
11. Lastly, let someone know your plans, where you will be traveling to and the time frame. Should you need assistance, program possible emergency numbers (911, ambulance, tow truck company, etc.) to speed up help.
As always, should you see anything criminal or dangerous, notify the local authorities or submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers. Dial **TIPS on a mobile device or download the P3 app and “Tap the App” to “Say It Here” and submit anonymous tips.
On behalf of the St. Landry Crime Stoppers Board, Sheriff Bobby Guidroz and the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office, have a joyous and blessed holiday season.
