A dispute over the sale of puppies resulted in shots being fired in the air and the arrest of a Eunice man who said he was protecting his family, according to a news release from St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz.
Travontay Markell Guillory, 20, of the 200 block of Chataignier Street, was charged with illegal discharge of a firearm after the incident on Tuesday.
Deputies arriving on the scene were told Guillory fired a .40-caliber pistol at least 13 times into the air during a verbal dispute involving his mother and another person over the sale of puppies, Guidroz said.
“Guillory stated he was told that the person arguing with his mother was in possession of a gun in his vehicle. Guillory then stated he witnessed what he thought the person reaching for something between his legs while backing his vehicle up to turn around and leave. Guillory stated he then began shooting his firearm into the air approximately 13 times in an attempt to scare off the person and to protect his family,” the news release stated.
Guidroz said, “A person has the right to protect his life or another person’s life when in imminent danger to losing his life or receiving great bodily harm. No person is allowed to blindly shoot into the air and put innocent people’s lives in danger.”
Guillory was taken to the parish jail after his arrest.
Bail was set at $7,500.
