An Opelousas deputy city marshal woke up on bad mood on Wednesday and punched his common law wife twice in the face, St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz said in a news release.
Michael Potter, 51, of the 100 block of Audrey Avenue, Port Barre, surrendered at the St. Landry Parish Jail on Thursday to face a domestic abuse battery charge, Guidroz said.
An investigation found Potter and his common law wife of 20 years had a physical altercation at about 9 p.m. Tuesday, but the wife didn’t want to get him in trouble, he said.
“The wife stated the whole thing started when Potter woke up in a bad mood and they argued throughout the day. The wife left the home then later returned to residence, Potter was standing in the living room and punched her in the face twice with a closed fist. The wife began defending herself when Potter grabbed his duty weapon along with another gun and left the residence. The wife sustained two small lacerations on her face but did not need medical attention,” the news release stated.
