Lady Bengals earn sweep over BRCC on Sophomore Day

LSUE honored nine sophomores with a pair of wins Friday over Baton Rouge Community College in their final home doubleheader.
Lady Bengal pitcher Heather Zumo pitched a complete-game shutout as LSUE rolled to a 6-0 win in the opener.
Zumo struck out five, walked one and allowed seven hits over seven innings.
LSUE jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first, begun when Mima Doucet and Madison Monson both singled and Emily Henderson was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Ally Howard walked to plate Mima Doucet, while three batters later Darian Doucet walked with two outs to score Monson.
Maleah Saucedo singled in Henderson as the Lady Bengals moved ahead, 3-0.
LSUE added two more runs in the bottom of the second when Mima Doucet and Monson hit back-to-back singles and Howard belted a two-RBI double to left field
The Lady Bengals added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth frame when Mima Doucet singled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Howard.
Baton Rouge left nine runners on base, while LSUE stranded eight.
Shelby Breaux suffered the loss for the Lady Bears as she allowed six earned runs on 10 hits with four walks and three strikeouts.
Mima Doucet led the Lady Bengals with a 3-for-4 performance, scoring three runs.
Monson went 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored.
Sierra Gasca went 2-for-3.
LSUE 5, BRCC 4
The finale was a much closer battle as LSUE rallied for a 5-4 win.
The Lady Bengals scored first when Mima Doucet tripled and crossed home plate on a single by Monson.
Monson scored on a sacrifice by Darian Doucet to give LSUE a 2-0 advantage.
Baton Rouge exploded for four runs in the top of the third, sparked when Sydnee Davis singled and scored on a hit by Heather Gardner.
Gardner scored on a single by Rene Firmin, while Savanna Orgeron walked and scored on a ground out by Liz Davis.
Firmin scored on an error to push the Lady Bears ahead, 4-2.
LSUE quickly responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning to force a 4-4 tie.
Monson walked and scored on a hit by Lakyn Wales.
Henderson singled and crossed home plate on a sacrifice by Darian Doucet.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the sixth inning when Darian Doucet walked and scored when Haley Godeaux blasted a two-out double to left field.
LSUE starting pitcher Morghan LaTour went 3.2 innings and allowed three earned runs on four hits with three walks and a strikeout.
Jeanne Trahan went 3.1 no-hit innings with one strikeout.
BRCC’s Rene Firmin was nabbed with the complete-game loss as she allowed five earned runs on six hits with three strikeouts and three walks.
Henderson went 2-for-3 with a run scored for the only multiple hit performance for LSUE.
The NJCAA Region 23 tournament is scheduled for May 11-12 in Mississippi as the site of Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges softball conference champion.
No. 3 Itawamba Community College (39-7) will host the MACJCAA tournament this weekend.
The double-elimination tournament will feature three of the nation’s top programs, as No. 4 Jones County Junior College (43-3) and No. 11 East Central Community College (33-10) will join Pearl River Community College (25-18) in the tournament.
The top three teams from the tournament will join No. 2 LSU-Eunice (40-15) in next week’s National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region 23 Tournament, hosted by the highest-seeded team advancing from the MACJC tournament.
LSU Eunice will vie for two available berths in the national championship tournament.
