The Basile Bearcats grabbed a key district sweep over rival St. Edmund Friday night at the Blue Jay gym.
The Lady Bearcats (7-15 overall, 3-4 in District 4-1A) exploded for a 18-2 first quarter run as Basile rolled to a 65-52 win.
Kinsleuy Marcantel scored two free throws for the only Lady Jay points in the first period.
Katheryn Giles and Caitlyn Deshotel both pushed in eight points for the Lady Bearcats in the quarter.
St. Edmund (6-12 overall, 4-3 in District 4-1A) regrouped for a 21-14 second quarter surge, led by seven points from Gabby Fontenot.
Camille Leger added six points, while Abby Miller and Maggie Larriviere chipped in three points each to help the Lady Jays close the gap to 32-23 at the break.
Giles led the Lady Bearcats with eight points in the period, while Lainey Soileau added six points.
Basile opened the second half with a 19-12 run as the Lady Bearcats began to put the game away.
Deshotels sparked Basile with nine points, while Giles contributed six points and Soileau added four more points to move the Lady Bearcats ahead, 51-35.
Leger led the Lady Jays with eight points in the period as Miller added four points.
St. Edmund rallied for a 17-14 battle in the fourth quarter could not overcome the sluggish start to the game.

St. Edmund was set to visit Merryville (14-6, 6-0) on Saturday to make up Tuesday’s postponed district clash before entertaining South Cameron (5-12, 3-4) Tuesday night.
Basile completed the sweep over St. Edmund as the Bearcats cruised to a 70-44 win over the Blue Jays.
Basile (5-10, 2-3) opened with a 12-2 run as the Bearcats took control of the game from the tip-off.
Alex Dupre scored the only Blue Jay (0-13, 0-5) points in the period with a bucket at the 4:17 mark to close the lead to 4-2.
The Bearcats then went on an 8-0 surge, aided by a trey from Keeman Ivory.
With a 10-point lead heading into the second period, the Bearcats exploded for a 12-0 run before Tyler Fonville scored in the lane for the Blue Jays.
After back-to-back buckets by Isiah Ceaser to push Basile up 32-5, Gus Brown scored in the lane for the Jays.

Fontenot scored on a second chance bucket late in the period before Ivory drove the lane in the closing seconds to give the Cats a 59-27 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
