Blue Jays cruise past Hurricanes

St. Edmund opened District 5-1A play Friday with a 57-0 win over North Central.
The Blue Jays (3-1, 1-0) will entertain rival Sacred Heart of Ville Platte this Friday.
St. Edmund held North Central (0-4, 0-2) on its first possession and the Blue Jays took over on the Hurricanes’ 25 when Easten Coleman tackled punter Kylin Joseph.
It took three plays for St. Ed’s first touchdown – an 11-yard pass from Henry Brown to Gus Brown.
Justin Landry’s kick gave the Jays 7-0 lead with 9:04 left in the first quarter.
The Hurricanes fumbled on its first play of the next drive and the Jays recovered at the North Central 30.
It took two 15-yard runs by Kieran Davis for the Jays to score again.
Landry’s PAT pushed St. Ed’s ahead 14-0 with 8:26 remaining in the opening period.
After North Central got a first down on a face mask penalty, Davis made a great defensive play when he tackled quarterback Aaron Johnson in the end zone for a safety.
The Jays led 16-0 with 7:40 left in the period and was quickly in scoring position when Taylor Daire returned the kickoff to the North Central 30.
After a strong run by Henry Brown, the Blue Jay quarterback then connected with Gus Brown for a 12-yard touchdown play.
The PAT failed, but the Blue Jays led, 22-0 with 6:56 remaining in the first quarter.
After a deep kickoff by Landry, the St. Edmund defense held the Hurrricanes and then scored another safety when the snap sailed over the punter’s head and out of the end zone.
With a 24-0 advantage with 5:30 left in the period, the Blue Jays took just two plays to score again.
Gus Brown gained 14 yards on the first play of the drive and then found Davis open for a 20-yard touchdown play.
Landry’s PAT increased the Blue Jays’ lead to 31-0 with 4:38 remaining in the quarter.
The St. Edmund defense pushed back the Hurricanes for -12 yards on North Central’s next possession.
Daire then returned the Hurricanes’ punt 53 yards for the score to put the Jays ahead, 37-0 with 2:14 left in the period.
Each team has just one possession in the second period as the officials started running time to speed up the game.
After a North Central punt, the Jays took over at the Hurricane 34.
Clay Miller’s pass to Coleman in the end zone was incomplete and then Davis was stopped at the North Central 13 as time expired in the first half.
With a 37-0 lead, the Jays took the second half kickoff and went 65 yards in just four plays.
After Miller was dropped on a quarterback sack, Davis appeared to score on a 74-yard scamper.
A Blue Jay penalty erased the points, but after another Davis run, Miller connected with Coleman for a 22-yard touchdown.
Landry’s kick pushed St. Ed’s ahead 44-0 with 5:21 left in the third period.
North Central was stopped on fourth down on their next drive and the Jays took over at the Hurricanes’ 41 as the game moved to the fourth quarter.
After two negative plays, Miller found Daire open for a 47-yard touchdown strike.
Landry’s PAT increased the Jays’ lead to 51-0 with 8:37 left in the game.
The St. Edmund defense recovered a North Central fumble and then scored one final time when Luke Trahan broke loose for a 35-yard touchdown run with 1:58 remaining in the fourth quarter.
The PAT failed, the Jays closed homecoming with a 57-0 win.
St. Edmund finished with 282 yards of total offense, while limiting North Central to -2 yards.
The Blue Jays had 169 yards rushing and added 113 yards passing in the win.
Davis finished with 116 yards on seven carries, followed by Trahan (1-35), Henry Brown (2-32).
Miller completed 2-of-4 passes for 70 yards, while Henry Brown was 3-for-3 for 43 yards.
Gus Brown had two catches for 23 yards and Daire added one catch for 48 yards.
Coleman had one reception for 22 yards and Davis had one catch for 20 yards.
North Central’s Johnson completed 5-of-10 passes for 28 yards, but the Hurricanes were held to -30 yards rushing on 17 plays.
