Blue Jays earn first win

GUEYDAN – It took an overtime run but the St. Edmund Blue Jays earned a 51-47 win over Gueydan  Tuesday night.

Tied at 46-46 heading into the extra period, the Blue Jays out-scored the Bears 5-1 as St. Edmund picked up its first win of the season.

St. Edmund’s Austin Gradney hit two free throws, Drake Trahan hit a bucket and Alex Dupre hit a free throw to seal the win.

The Blue Jays (1-4) jumped out to an 11-8 lead, sparked by  three treys by Gradney and a bucket by Carter Andrus.

Gueydan (0-2) answered with a 17-15  second quarter surge, led by six points from Noah Boudreaux and  five more points by Bailey Istre.

St. Edmund took a 26-25 advantage into the locker room, as Gradney led the Jays with six points, while Dupre pushed in five points and Christian Fontenot chipped in four points.

The battle continued in the third quarter as the Jays held a 10-9 advantage.

Gradney led the Jays with seven points and Andrus added three points to help the the Jays take a 36-34 lead into the final period.

Gueydan rallied for a 12-10 run in the fourth quarter to force the overtime period.

Dominic Touchet led the Bears with six points, while Dupre pushed in six points for the Jays.

Gradney finished with 24 points to lead the Blue Jays, while Dupre chipped in 12 points.

Touchet led Gueydan with 16 points, while Boudreaux added 11 points and Istre contributed 10 points.

The Lady Bears jumped out to an 11-2 first quarter advantage as Gueydan grabbed a 39-25 win over  the Lady Jays.

Ashari Terry led Gueydan (4-4) with five points, while T’Nia Leger added four points.

Gabby Fontenot scored the only Lady Jays (1-4) points in the period.

Gueydan outscored St. Edmund 9-3 in the second period as the Lady Bears took a 20-5 advantage into the intermission.

Gueydan’s 15-4 surge in the third period put the game away as the Lady Bears forged ahead, 35-15.

Terry and Kendra Petry each pushed in five points, while Ke’Ara Charles added three points.

St. Edmund’s Allison Lafleur led the Lady Jays with four points in the period as Kinsley Marcantel, Maggie Larriviere and Camille Leger each added a bucket.

The Lady Jays closed the game with a 10-4 run, sparked by five points from Fontenot along with baskets from Lafleur and Leger as well as a free throw by Larriviere.

Fontenot finished with seven points for the Lady Jays, while Lafleur and Leger each chipped in six points.

Terry led Gueydan with 12 points, while Petry contributed 11 points.
