The St. Emund Blue Jays open the 2018 season at home Friday night against Hanson Memorial.
The Blue Jays rolled to a 35-6 win over the Tigers in last year’s season opener en route to a 10-2 overall finish.
St. Edmund earned a 12-7 win over the Notre Dame junior varsity in the Joe Nagata Memorial jamboree.
A 25-yarder by Jack Miller and an 18-yard run by Brad Miller accounted for the Blue Jay points.
Kaden Fontenot snared an interception on the game’s final play to seal the win over the Pioneers.
“I thought our kids played hard and executed better than we did in the scrimmage,” St. Edmund head coach Andy Hargroder said. “We still have a ways to to be where we need to be.
“We worked on a lot of jamboree mistakes this week in practice,” he said.
“I was pleased that we performed well in fast paced game.”
Hanson (3-8 in 2017) fell 27-13 to Covenant Christian in last week’s Centerville jamboree.
“Last year they had 12 seniors so this year they are not quite as experienced as they were.” Hargroder said of the Tigers.

Oberlin at Mamou
MAMOU – First-year head coach Dwight Collins and his Green Demons will open the season at home tonight as the Oberlin Tigers visit Mamou.
Oberlin won the 2017 opener, 28-12.
The Green Demons battled to a 0-0 tie last week against Ville Platte in the Evangeline Parish jamboree.
“I liked the fact that we were able to compete,” Collins said. “We need to stop the mental breakdowns and stay focused.”
Collins said he thinks his team will improved this week.
“We need to control the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball,” he said. “We can’t hurt ourselves with turnovers.”
The Green Demon coach said his team is ready to get the season started.
“We have had some good practices and we are excited to play and see what we can do.”
