Sometimes it just doesn’t go your way.
St. Edmund opened the season with a 35-6 win over Hanson Memorial and the Blue Jays had chances to win in the 29-21 loss to Sacred Heart of Ville Platte.
“It came down to they made plays and we didn’t.” St. Edmund head coach Andy Hargroder said of the loss to the Trojans. “At the times we had to make plays, we stumbled and they didn’t.”
Mamou has suffered back-to-back winless seasons after a 1-9 finish in 2014.
The Green Demons battled in the first two games of this season, falling to Oberlin (28-12) and Basile (16-14).
Mamou’s Daylon Ardoin would end the night with 15 carries and 100 yards and a touchdown against Basile.
Ardoin also completed 8 of 12 passes for 82 yards and a touchdown toss to Thomas Atkins.
“They are very athletic and they have a lot of speed,” Hargroder said of the Demons. “They are bigger than us up front.
“We have to eliminate penalties and turnovers to have a chance. If we do that we will stay in every ball game.”
Hargroder said it is vital that they keep Ardoin between the tackles and not let him made a big play.
“We have to make sure we corral them, we can’t let anyone break outside.”
The Blue Jay coach said the Demons are improved from last year, even with their 0-2 record.
“We are starting to do better on offense,” Hargroder said. “We should be at full strength soon so every game I think we are going to get better.
“If we do what we are supposed to do, I think we can move the ball on any team.”
Hargroder said their combination of quarterback Brad Miller and running back Luke Doucet, they should be able to run the ball and score points.
“They are both two very good football players,” he said. “If a team choses to take any one then the other can have success.”
