For the third week in a row, the Blue Jay defense recorded a shut out as St. Edmund rolled to a 31-0 homecoming win over South Cameron.
“It was a great job to earn the win,” St. Edmund head coach Andy Hargroder said. “The defense played lights out and the offense got a bunch a yards in the first half.
“We need to keep it going the rest of the district run.”
St. Edmund outgained South Cameron 453-53 and limited the Tarpons to just two first downs in the game.
The Tarpons opened the game with a six play, 31-yard drive, the Jays special teams blocked the fourth-down kick.
It took the St. Edmund offense just three plays to go 66 yards, aided by strong runs from Peter Miller and Peyton Marcantel.
Blue Jay quarterback Brad Miller then raced 20 yards for the touchdown to push St. Ed’s ahead 6-0 with 6:54 left in the first period.
After a short Tarpon punt gave the Jays the ball at the South Cameron 19, S. Ed’s scored in just three plays – capped by a three-yard touchdown run by Brad Miller.
Marcantel’s kick increased the Jays’ lead to 13-0 with 4:17 remaining in the quarter.
South Cameron was forced to punt again and on the first play of the next Blue Jay possession, Peter Miller raced 77 yards for the score.
The PAT failed. but the Jays led 19-0 with 1:51 left in the opening period.
The Tarpons had the ball for just one play as Carter Lejeune intercepted Brayden Richard’s pass at the South Cameron 35.
Four plays later, Brock Bieber scored on a 20-yard run to open the second period.
The PAT failed, but the Jays moved ahead, 25-0 with 11:50 left before halftime.
The Tarpons were stopped on fourth down near midfield when Marcantel tackled Ty Trosclair for a four-yard loss.
But the Blue Jay offense was also stopped on fourth down at the South Cameron 40.
The St. Edmund defense forced a fumble and Josh Smith recovered the loose ball at the Tarpon 38 with 7:22 left in the half.
The Jays moved inside the South Cameron 10, but a fumble on fourth down stopped the drive.
Two plays later, the St. Edmund defense responded as Brock Bieber snared an interception at the Tarpon 23. with 1:38 left in the second period.
After a penalty and two incomplete passes, the Jays’ field goal atttempt fell short with seven seconds left but St. Edmund held a 25-0 advantage at the break.
The Jays took the second half kickoff and went 90 yards in nine plays, sparked by strong run from Bieber, Jack Miller and Brad Miller.
Marcantel scored from five yards out with 7:31 left in the third period as the Jays forged ahead, 31-0.
After forcing a punt, the Jays fumbled the ball right back to the Tarpons near midfield.
South Cameron had to punt again and pinned the Jays back to the St. Ed 15.
The Blue Jays moved 42 yards on six plays, but a fourth-down fumble stopped the drive on the first play of the fourth period.
But again the St. Edmund defense responded when Nick Fontenot intercepted a pass at the Blue Jay 25 with 9:41 left in the game.
The St. Edmund offense then went on a 49-yard, 14-play drive that consumed nine minutes off the clock.
Clay Miller, Luke Trahan, Wesley Driggs all helped move the ball before a fumble at the Tarpon 26 ended the drive with 41 seconds left in the game.
