Blue Jays run past Panthers

St. Edmund set a school record for points scored in a game as the Blue Jays soared to a 69-6 win over Pine Prairie.
The previous record was set in 2018 when St. Edmund rolled to a 67-0 win at Grand Lake.
The home field record was previously set in 2013 when the Blue Jays scored 63 points against Catholic High of Pointe Coupee.
The Blue Jays were supposed to face Sacred Heart of Ville Platte in a District 5-1A contest, but the Trojans were sidelined with COVID-19 issues.
Pine Prairie’s game against Iota was erased when the Bulldogs were also facing coronavirus cases.
St. Edmund (4-1) is set to return to district play this week at Westminster Christian Academy.
The Blue Jays had the ball first against the Panthers and quickly went 40 yards in five plays.
Wesley Driggs returned the kickoff to midfield and Kieran Davis followed with two strong runs.
After a personal foul penalty, Davis helped the Jays move to the Pine Prairie 27.
Henry Brown then connected with Gus Brown for a 27-yard scoring strike and Justin Landry’s PAT gave the Jays a 7-0 lead with 10:09 left in the first period.
The Panthers lost four yards in their first possession and the Jays promptly advanced 67 yards in six plays.
Runs by Nick Fontenot and Davis along with a pass from Henry Brown to Gus Brown pushed the Jays into Pine Prairie territory.
An illegal procedure flag followed with an unsportsmanlike call put the Jays back to the SEH 49.
But on the next play, Taylor Daire broke loose for a 51-yard touchdown run. Landry’s PAT increased the Jays’ lead to 14-0 with 5:08 remaining in the first quarter.
Pine Prairie (0-6) responded with a 74-yard drive in five plays, capped with a 33-yard strike from Branson Fontenot to Elijah George.
The PAT failed, but the Panthers closed the gap to 14-6 with 2:23 left in the period.
St. Edmund’s next drive started near midfield, aided by another good kickoff return.
Henry Brown connected with Davis for a 15-yard play and Davis followed with an impressive run to the Panther 19.
The four-play drive ended when Brown connected with Easten Coleman for a 19-yard touchdown toss.
Davis ran in the two-point conversion to increase the Jays’ lead to 22-6 with 1:12 remaining in the first quarter.
After forcing another Pine Prairie punt, the Jays scored on the first play of their next possession when Henry Brown found Coleman open for a 66-yard touchdown.
The PAT failed, but SEH led 28-6 with 10:58 left in the second quarter.
A short punt by the Panthers gave the Jays great field position and St. Ed’s moved 40 yards in five plays, aided by a 19-yard pass from Henry Brown to Daire.
Davis scored on a five-yard run and Landry’s PAT increased the Jays’ lead to 35-6 with 6:57 left in the half.
Pine Prairie’s next punt was blocked and the Jays scored on the next play when Henry Brown connected with Gus Brown for a 35-yard touchdown.
Landry’s kick pushed SEH ahead 42-6 with 5:321 remaining in the second period.
Pine Prairie moved the ball deep into Blue Jay territory on a long pass from Fontenot to Isaiah Payne.
But on the next play, Davis recovered a Panther fumble and raced 82 yards for a scoop and score.
Landry’s kick increased the Jays’ lead to 49-6 with 2:01 left before intermission.
After forcing Pine Prairie to punt on its first drive of the second half, the Blue Jays moved 35 yards in just two plays, capped by a 17-yard scoring pass from Clay Miller to Coleman.
The PAT failed, but SEH led 55-6 with 8:44 left in the third period.
The Blue Jays recovered a fumbled kickoff and Miller connected with Nick Fontenot for a 27-yard touchdown.
Miller ran in the two-point conversion as St. Ed’s moved ahead 63-6 with 6:33 left in the quarter.
After the seventh Panther punt, the Jays moved deep into Pine Prairie territory before being stopped on fourth down at the PPHS five yard line.
The Panthers moved the ball to near midfield before the Jays recovered a fumble to stop the drive.
Two plays later, Kaleb George scored on a 40-yard run to push the Jays up 69-6 with 1:26 left in the contest.
William Bundick recovered a muffed squib kickoff and the Jays ran out the clock to end the game.
St. Edmund finished with 488 yards of total offense and held the Panthers to 144 yards on the night.
Henry Brown completed 7-of-9 passes for 194 yards.
Miller completed 3-for-3 for 62 yards, while Luke Vidrine completed 2-of-2 for 18 yards.
Coleman had four catches for 120 yards and Gus Brown added three catches for 77 yards.
Davis finished with 91 yards on 10 carries, while Daire had one run for 51 yards.
COVID-19 has forced a few changes to the football schedule.
Church Point’s game against Mamou has been cancelled as was Sacred Heart of Ville Platte’s scheduled home District 5-1A game against Opelousas Catholic.
Church Point will now travel to Opelousas Catholic on Friday.
Basile was forced to cancel its games against East Beauregard and Merryville, but the Bearcats are expected to return to play this week at Gueydan.
Iota’s homecoming game against Pine Prairie was cancelled and the Bulldogs will not travel to Northwest this week.
After their games against Welsh and Tioga were cancelled, the Eunice Bobcats are scheduled to return this week with a home District 4-4A game against North Vermilion.
