This week it counts.
After a scrimmage against Pine Prairie and a jamboree contest against Vermilion Catholic, St. Edmund begins the regular season at Vinton Friday night.
First-year head coach James Shiver is excited about seeing what the Blue Jays can do against the Class 2-A Lions.
Vinton finished 4-7 in 2018 including a 54-0 loss to Ferriday in the opening round of the state playoffs.
The Lions fell 20-14 to Grand Lake in the Lake Charles area jamboree last week.
“They have two running backs who are pretty good,” Shiver said of the Vinton offense. “They moved to a spread system which will help their quarterback after throwing for over 1,000 yards last year.
“They have a good defense as well.”
The Blue Jays were shut out 9-0 by VC in the Joe Nagata Memorial jamboree.
“As in any game we can get better,” Shiver said. “I thought our defense played awesome as we held them to nine points and they are usually scoring all kinds of points.”
VC finished with 144 yards of total offense, while the Jays were limited to 53 yards on 19 plays in the jamboree.
Shiver said he kept the offense very simple against the Eagles but should be more productive this week.
“I am looking forward to the season starting this week,” he said. “Our defense has its work cut out for it this week and hopefully our offense is on target.”
Shiver said he knows that its important to start the season with a win but its only one game.
“I feel we can be productive against anybody,” he said. “I see hole is what Vinton does defensively and hopefully we can take advantage of that.”
The Blue Jays only threw five times in the jamboree which was by design according to the coach.
“I think we can throw against Vinton,” Shiver said. “It starts with how well our offensive line can block.”
