ELTON – The District 4-1A battle will begin to take shape this week as St. Edmund visits Elton.
The Indians lost their first three games against Lake Arthur (42-13), East Beauregard (321-18) and Rosepine (43-20).
Elton then earned district wins over Grand Lake (42-16) and Hamilton Christian (16-0).
“They are very athletic and big up front,” St. Edmund head coach Andy Hargroder said of the Indians, “They also can spread it out – so we have to plan for anything.
“They pull you in to stop the run and then throw it to their big receiver.”
The Blue Jays are undefeated in district after wins over Basile (14-0) and South Cameron (31-0).
“I was pleased to see how we adjusted on offense and took what they gave us,” Hargroder said of the 453 yards rushing against South Cameron.
“They were crowding the inside so we took advantage of the outside.”
St. Edmund’s Jack Miller finished with 170 yards on nine carries including touchdown runs of 3- and 77-yards.
Against Basile, quarterback Brad Miller finished with 210 yards on 20 carries and scored on runs of 48- and 5-yards.
While the Blue Jay offense is averaging 24 points per game this season, the St, Edmund defense has allowed 4.4 points per game.
The Jays have out gained its opponents 1,292 to 202 yards on the ground.
But St. Edmund has allowed 91.4 yards per game through the air so far this season.
“We have to be certain we don’t give up the big play,” the coach said. “Teams have scored three touchdowns on us all year but they were all three through the air.”
In other district games this week, Grand Lake visits Merryville and Oberlin entertains Hamilton Christian.
South Cameron was forced to forfeit this week’s game against Basile because the Tarpons don’t have enough healthy players.
