VILLE PLATTE – Its easy to understand what makes the St. Edmund – Sacred Heart of Ville Platte clash a rivalry game.
The two towns are around 20 miles apart and many of the players know each other.
But for St. Edmund head coach Andy Hargroder, he is hopeful his Blue Jays treat it like any other game.
“The fans take it a little bit more of a rivalry game than we do.
“As coaches, it is business as usual,” he said. “We want to win every week.”
Sacred Heart is coming off a 20-7 win over the Ville Platte Bulldogs in Tee Cotton XV.
In their victory over the Bulldogs, Sacred Heart secured the game late in the fourth quarter by pounding the ball 61 yards down the field in only eight plays.
The Trojans, utilizing the new split back veer scheme on offense, rushed the ball 47 times for just over 200 yards.
Defensively, Sacred Heart surrendered a net total of 58 yards on the ground and 91 yards through the air.
“They play hard and don’t quit,” Hargroder said of the Trojans. “We expect the game to be a challenge.”
In the Blue Jays’ 45-12 win over Hanson Memorial, the St. Edmund offense rolled up 261 yards on the ground.
“Even though we scored a lot of points, we still made a lot of mistakes,” Hargroder said. “We need to improve our fundamentals.”
Hanson Memorial finished with 177 yards of total offense, including 150 yards passing.
The Tigers scored two fourth quarter touchdowns after the Jays jumped out to a 45-0 lead.
St. Edmund did put points on the board with a 32-yard punt return by Jack Miller and a 42-yard interception return by Wesley Driggs.
Sacred Heart won 29-21 at St. Edmund last season.
