With two district games remaining, St. Edmund head coach James Shiver knows how important Friday’s game at Westminster Christian Academy is if the Blue Jays want to claim the District 5-1A title.
Opelousas Catholic and Sacred Heart have both seen two district games erased because of COVID-19 issues.
St. Edmund will not face the Vikings or Trojans in the regular season as the Blue Jays have only played North Central in district competition.
“If we can beat Westminster then we could face Catholic of Pointe Coupee for the district title,” Shiver said. “This is an important week for us.”
In the 49-7 loss to Catholic High of Pointe Coupee, WCA fell behind 30-0 as CHPC’s Matthew Langlois ran for three first half touchdowns after only four carries.
Westminster allowed 296 rushing yards as the Hornets finished with 350 total yards.
WCA’s touchdown came with 2:45 in the third period on a 36-yard Cade Lyons run.
The Crusaders were limited to 150 total yards as Lyons rushed for 42, while fullback Bryant Moore gained 55 on four attempts.
“They don’t have a lot of fire power,” Shiver said. “But they have still won games.”
After falling to Avoyelles in the season opener, the Jays have won four games in a row.
St. Edmund set a school record for points in a game last week as the Blue Jays rolled to a 69-6 win over Pine Prairie.
“We have done well getting the ball to our weapons,” Shiver said.
“Kieran Davis is running the ball well for us and he keeps is constant in our running game,” the coach said.
After five games, Davis has 68 carries for 485 yards and five touchdowns.
“When they try to stop the run, that’s when we can throw the ball,” Shiver said. “We have Gus Brown and Easten Coleman as great receivers.”
Gus Brown has 10 catches for 306 yards and seven scores, while Coleman has 11 receptions for 281 yards and six scores.
Henry Brown has completed 23-of-32 passes for 602 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Nick Fontenot and Taylor Daire are also contributing to the Blue Jay offense that is averaging 48.8 points and 347 yards per game.
“Henry is running the offense well,” Shiver said. “We have a bunch of weapons on offense and we use them all.”
The Blue Jay defense has held opponents to an average of 15.2 points and 185 yards per game.
Presently, St. Emund is No. 7 in the Division IV power rankings, while WCA is No. 18.
