Blue Jays win, Bobcats stumble in tourney opener

St. Edmund cruised to a 9-5 win over Pine Prairie in their opening game of the John R. Young Chevrolet/Frey Holding Company Baseball Tournament at Blue Jay Field.
St. Edmund grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when Michael Zaunbrecher singled and scored on a double by Austin Gradney.
Pine Prairie exploded for four runs in the top of the third frame to grab its only lead of the game.
Jordan Ardoin, Nick Ortego and Sylas Carson all singled to load the bases.
Cole Thomas ripped a triple to clear the bases but was put out attempting to steal home.
Drake Lee tripled and scored on a ground out by Joel Franks as the Panthers grabbed a 4-2 advantage.
St. Edmund closed the gap to 4-3 in the bottom of the inning when Zaunbrecher singled, advanced on a passed ball and scored on an error.
The Blue Jays rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fifth to move ahead, 6-4.
Jack Brown singled and scored as Brock Bieber reached on an error.
Bieber later scored when Zaunbrecher reached on an error.
Zaunbrecher scored on a sacrifice bunt by Dawson Ardoin as the Jays then kept its lead the rest of the way.
St. Edmund added three more runs with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Brown singled and scored when Luke Doucet reached on an error.
Bieber reached on an error and scored on a hit by Gradney.
Doucet scored on a hit by Ardoin to push the Jays ahead by five runs.
Pine Prairie closed the final margin to 9-5 with a run in the top of the sixth inning when Joel Franks reached on an error, advances on a passed ball and scored on another Blue Jay error.
Gradney led St. Edmund with three hits including a double, two RBI and reached base four times.
Zaunbrecher went 2-for-4 with a RBI and also reached base four times in the game.
Brown finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Dawson Ardoin earned the complete game win as he struck out five, walked two and allowed four earned runs on seven hits.
Pine Prairie’s Jordan Ardoin suffered the loss as he struck out eight, walked two and allowed one earned run on nine hits.
The Panthers committed nine errors in the game which led to eight Blue Jay runs.
St. Edmund (5-3) entertains Beau Chene (7-1) at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

ASH 13, Eunice 10
The Eunice High Bobcats dropped a 13-10 decision to Alexandria Senior High in their opening game of the John R. Young Chevrolet/Frey Holding Company Baseball Tournament at Bobcat Field.
Eunice High starting pitcher Gunner Fontenot limited the Trojans to no runs and two hits over the first two innings of play and his teammates supported him with two runs off Trojan starter Zack Walker in the bottom of the second inning.
Zac Guillory opened the inning with a single but was forced out at second base on a grounder by Jonas Granger.
A single by Christian Taylor and two walks and a run-scoring single by Fontenot gave the Bobcats a 2-0 lead.
But the Trojan offense would respond in the top of the third, scoring four runs, highlighted by a two-run triple by Billy McNulty for a 4-2 lead. The Trojans added two more runs in the fourth inning, chasing Fontenot from the mound.
The Bobcats fought back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 6-5.
Taylor doubled to open the inning and Walker walked Josh Youngblood.
Both runners scored on a sacrifice bunt by Jaden Brasseaux, which was misplayed into a throwing error by the Trojans. Brasseaux later scored.
The Trojans extended their lead to 10-5 with four runs in the fifth inning.
The Cats scored a run in the bottom of the fifth as Guillory reached on an error.
Courtesy runner Brady Smith scored following singles by Youngblood and Brasseaux to cut the lead to 10-6.
The Cats held the Trojans scoreless in the top of the sixth inning and the Cats scored twice to close within 10-8.
Austin Phillips drew a walk to open the inning and scored on a double by Tyler Darbonne.
Darbonne later scored after Cade Richard singled.
The Trojans, though, would add to their lead in the top of the seventh with three runs to extend the lead to 13-8.
The Cats responded in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Fontenot and Phillips worked walks and both scored after a wild pitch and a single from Darbonne.
But the Trojans held on by getting the final two outs without further damage in the 13-10 win.
