Bobcats advance to quarterfinals

Eunice High advanced to the Class 3A quarterfinals by winning the best two of three playoff games against the North Vermilion Patriots in regional action played at Bobcat Field.
No. 5 Eunice will travel to No. 4 Berwick at 6 p.m. Friday to take on the Panthers.
The winner of the best two-of-three games advances to the state semifinal round.
Berwick (25-8) advanced with a pair of 10-0, 13-1 wins over Jennings.
The last time the Bobcats advanced to the quarterfinals was in 2013 when Eunice lost to North DeSoto.
With the two-game sweep over North Vermilon, the Bobcats set a new season win record as Eunice improved to 29-8.
The 2000 Bobcats finished 28-8 as Eunice fell to in the state quarterfinals to Haughton.
In the opening game between the Bobcats and the Patriots, both offenses were held in check by starting pitchers, Garrett Becker of North Vermilion and Ian George of Eunice.
The two pitchers were able to shutout their opponents over the first two innings.
But the Patriots would break through with a run in the top of the third inning when Darian Duhon singled, advanced on Ethan Bennett’s sacrifice bunt and later scored on an error to take a 1-0 lead.
North Vermilion added a run in the fourth inning as Tristen Frederick drew a walk, advanced to second on a single by Tanner Trahan, and scored on a grounder for a 2-0 lead.
The Bobcats responded in the bottom of the fourth.
Jayden Brasseaux and Grant Fontenot drew walks with no outs.
Seth Venable’s sacrifice bunt advanced both runners.
A John Lejeune fly ball to right field scored Brasseaux when the ball bounced off the glove of Bennett, which allowed Fontenot to score as well.
George doubled to score Lejeune to give the Bobcats a 3-2 lead.
North Vermilion tried to come back in the top of the fifth on a single and a walk.
George was relieved by Luke Andrepont and he retired the side to keep the Cats on top.
The Eunice offense would take over from there, scoring three runs in the fifth inning and six more in the sixth inning to claim a 12-2 run-rule victory.
Josh Youngblood doubled in the fourth and smashed a three-run home run in the sixth to lead the offense.
On Saturday, the two teams met again, with the Patriots as the home team, facing Tyler Darbonne on the mound. Darbonne shut down the Patriot offense with four strong innings of work.
He shutout the Patriots, limiting them to two hits over four innings.
Brasseaux relieved Darbonne and he worked the final three innings, allowing one hit and two runs in the seventh inning.
The Bobcats scored one run in the third inning and added two more in the fourth inning.
Brasseaux singled and Fontenot was hit by a pitch to open the inning.
Lejeune and Andrepont each drove in a run to give the Cats a 3-2 lead.
The Cats added two more runs in the sixth, with George and Andrepont scoring the runs. Austin Phillips sacrifice bunt moved both runners, who were driven home by Darbonne and Brasseaux for a 5-2 lead. Lejeune singled and scored on a single by George to give the Bobcats a 6-2 victory.
