Bobcats cruise past Gents in district opener

The Eunice High Bobcats opened District 5-3A baseball play by taking a 14-1 victory over the Crowley High Gents Tuesday evening at Bobcat Field.
The Bobcats improved their overall record to 12-6 with the victory over the Gents.
Eunice wasted little time in taking charge of the game after Bobcat starting pitcher, Ian George retired the Gents in order in the top of the first inning.
The Bobcats didn’t waste any time in getting to Crowley pitcher Christian Stafford in the first inning after he recorded a strikeout to open the bottom of the inning.
Austin Phillips drew a walk and stole second and third base as Youngblood reached base when he hit by a pitch.
Tyler Darbonne walked to load the bases before Jayden Brasseaux worked a base-on-balls to score Phillips. Youngblood and Darbonne scored on Grant Fontenot’s two-run single to give the Bobcats a 4-0 lead.
George kept the Gents scoreless through the second and third innings as his teammates scored four more runs in the second inning to extend their lead to 8-0.
Darbonne doubled with two out to spark the inning. Brasseaux followed with a run-scoring single before Fontenot singled and Seth Venable drew a walk.
John Christian Lejeune drove in two both runners with a two-run single.
The Cats added a single run in the third inning after George walked and scored on Darbonne’s run-scoring groundout for a 9-0 lead.
The Bobcats completed their scoring in the fourth. Fontenot opened the inning with a single and Venable was hit by a pitch. Lejeune singled home a run before singles by Phillips and Youngblood to give the Cats a 14-0 lead.
The Gents scored their lone run in the fifth inning as Stafford scored on an error. George earned the mound win by working four innings.
He allowed one hit, struck out five, and walked three. Luke Andrepont pitched one inning in relief, allowing one hit and an unearned run in the top of the fifth.
Eunice travels to Crowley 6 p.m. today as district action continues.

YOUNGSVILLE – The Bobcats claimed a 14-2 victory over Delcambre at the Ascension Episcopal Tournament.
The Panthers threatened to score in the top of the first inning after Trevyn Guillbeau singled and advanced to second on a groundout, but Bobcat starting pitcher Jayden Brasseaux retired the next two batters to end the threat.
The Bobcats responded in the bottom of the inning as Luke Andrepont singled and advanced to second after Phillips drew a walk.
Panther pitcher Kevin Hopkins struck out Josh Youngblood, but Darbonne reached on an error to score Andrepont and Phillips.
After Hopkins hit Grant Fontenot with a pitch, Seth Venable drove in two more runs with a single to give the Bobcats a 4-0 lead.
The Cats added four more runs in the second inning as Youngblood tripled to score Andrepont who had reached base on an error.
Darbonne drove in Youngblood with a grounder and Hopkins issued walks to Brasseaux and Fontenot before Seth Venable drove home two runners to give the Bobcats an 8-0 lead.
The Cats scored six more runs in the third inning, with Darbonne driving in three with a triple and Brasseaux and Fontenot each contributing singles before Coach Scott Phillips began to clear his bench.
Brasseaux earned the mound victory with four innings of work. He allowed five hits, two runs, and recorded four strikeouts.
Darbonne finished the game by retiring the side in order in the fifth inning.
