Bobcats cruise past OHS, 19-1

The Eunice High Bobcats discovered their offense as they pounded out 15 hits in a 19-1 blowout over the Opelousas High Tigers at Bobcat Field in baseball action Monday.
The game was originally scheduled to be played in Opelousas but was moved to Eunice because of field conditions in Opelousas.
The Bobcats wasted no time in attacking the pitching of the Tigers, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning after Bobcat starting pitcher Austin Phillips shut out the Tigers in his first inning of work.
Eunice shortstop Cade Richard opened the bottom of the first inning with a single and a stolen base. Phillips joined him on base after getting hit by a pitch by Tiger pitcher Ty Wheeler.
Gunner Fontenot singled to load the bases and Christian Taylor delivered a three-run double to give the Bobcats a 3-0 lead. Taylor later scored on a single by Zac Guillory for a 4-0 lead.
The Bobcats continued their offensive onslaught with a six-run second inning.
Jaden Brasseaux was hit by a pitch and stole second base to open the inning. Richard and Phillips drew walks to load the bases.
A single by Gunner Fontenot plated two runs before Taylor doubled to score two more runs. Guillory drove in Taylor and later scored on a double by Jonas Granger as the Bobcats claimed a 10-0 lead.
The Cats would add four more runs in the third for a 14-0 lead.
Opelousas scored its only run in the fourth inning. Wheeler reached on an error and eventually scored on a bases-loaded walk.
Coach Scott Phillips cleared his bench in the fifth inning and the Cats added five more runs as Brady Smith and Jay Pitre contributed RBI hits.
Austin Phillips earned the mound win with four innings of work.
He allowed just two hits and one unearned run.
Phillips walked four and stuck out three.
Grant Fontenot completed the game on the mound, retiring the side in order. He struck out one batter.
The Bobcats, now 2-3 on the season, travel to Monroe to compete in the Trey Altick Prep Classic.
The Bobcats open play 5 p.m. today against Pineville at Sterlington.
On Friday, the Cats take on West Feliciana in a 3:15 start at Choundrant.
The Cats play twice on Saturday, taking on Jena in a noon start at Ouachita Parish High School before travelling to face Caldwell in a 4:30 start at Caldwell.

Opelousas Catholic tournament
OPELOUSAS – The Eunice High Bobcats completed play in the Opelousas Catholic Baseball Tournament last weekend by defeating Iota High School 6-4 and losing to host Opelousas Catholic by a 9-6 margin.
The Bobcats took a 1-0 lead against the Iota High Bulldogs. Jonas Granger singled, advanced to third on a double by Gunner Fontenot, and scored on a groundout by Christian Taylor.
The Cats increased their lead to 3-0 with a two-run second inning. Josh Youngblood drew a walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kameron Givens. Jaden Brasseaux walked and he and Youngblood scored on a single by Austin Phillips.
Iota scored two runs in their second inning thanks to a double by Kam Aucoin and a bunt single by Brett Spell. The Bulldogs added two more runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by John Mouton’s two-run double.
The Bobcats responded with three runs in the fifth inning. Phillips drew a walk to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a passed ball and a bunt single by Granger. Fontenot walked and Tyler Darbonne singled home a run and Fontenot later scored to put the Bobcats up 6-4.
Brasseaux, the Eunice starting pitcher, worked a scoreless fifth inning before giving way to Granger in relief. Granger issued a walk but retired the other three batters to maintain the Bobcat lead. Christian Taylor came on to relieve Granger with one out in the seventh inning to close out the game.
The Bobcats struggled offensively on Sunday against the Opelousas Catholic Vikings. Conner Castille limited the Bobcats to two hits over five innings after the Vikings took a 4-0 lead in the first inning with the help of a disputed umpire call. The Bobcats did manage a run in the second inning on a double by Eunice pitcher Tyler Darbonne, but the Vikings scored one run in the third and four more in the fourth to build a 9-1 lead.
The Bobcats scored twice in the fourth and once in the fifth to cut the lead to 9-4. They added two more runs thanks to five walks in the sixth inning, but were unable to add more. Taylor and Granger saw relief duty in the final three innings for the Cats, with Granger allowing just one hit and striking out four over the final two innings.
