The District 5-3A title has been won by the Church Point Bears, but the Bobcats and Bulldogs still have plenty of reasons to fight in the regular season finale Friday at Iota.
Eunice is coming off a crucial 14-7 win over Northwest as the Bobcats are riding a four-game winning streak.
“If we win Friday, we will be in sole possession of second place in district, which is impressive considering what we went through this season,” Eunice High head coach Paul Trosclair said. “I am really pleased with our seniors and what they did to keep this ship afloat.”
Eunice opened the season with a 24-0 win over Opelousas, but then fell to Jennings (26-10), Rayne (42-10), Crowley (39-0) and Church Point (28-17).
The Bobcats then earned wins over Port Barre (47-0), Pine Prairie (27-13), Mamou (53-8) and last week over Northwest.
“Our players were real serious about keeping the win streak going and they did,” Trosclair said.
“We are playing better and getting more execution on both sides of the ball – that paid off for us.
In the LHSAA power rankings, Iota is presently sitting at No. 14, while Eunice is No. 20.
“They have been building and seem to have a good football program,” Trosclair said of the Bulldogs. “They have a balanced offensive attack and that is the biggest problem we will face.”
The Bulldogs are led by running back Kaleb Guillory who has gained 1,700 yards this season and scored twice last week to help Iota grab a 14-7 win over Pine Prairie.
The Bulldogs’ district losses came against Northwest (34-19) and Church Point (41-34), but Iota earned a 20-16 win over Crowley to go with victories over Mamou (54-12), Port Barre (47-0) and Pine Prairie.
“The two teams are pretty evenly matched,” the Bobcat coach said. “Whoever makes the least mistakes will be the winner.”
