PORT BARRE – Eunice led 20-6 against Church Point as the game moved to the fourth quarter, but the Bears exploded for 16 points in the final period to rally for a 22-20 win over the Bobcats.
“I don’t ever remember us giving up a two-touchdown lead in the fourth quarter,” Eunice head coach Paul Trosclair said. “But give Church Point credit, they did it.
“We needed one more score – either a field goal or a touchdown,” he said. “I thought we had it but we had a touchdown called back that really hurt.
“We played head-to-head with a really good football team so that is a good sign,” the Bobcat coach said. “But when you have a chance to finish somebody, you need to finish and we didn’t.”
Eunice (4-1, 1-1) travels to Port Barre (2-3, 1-1) this week as District 5-3A action continues.
“We need to improve fundamentally,” Trosclair said. “We need to get better as we have big district games left.
“We want to start a new winning streak,” the coach said. “We won four in a row and we want to finish up strong.
“We are trying to finish with the best playoff draw we can,” the coach said. “That is going to require more wins.”
The Red Devils opened the season with a 61-0 loss to Catholic High of Pointe Coupee but rebounded for a 9-0 win over Beau Chene.
Port Barre lost a close 18-13 battle with Opelousas Catholic before opening district play with a 14-6 win over Mamou.
“Port Barre has a tradition of having good athletes,” Trosclair said. “We know they are going to give us their best shot. It’s an important game for both teams.”
The Red Devils fell 27-0 to Pine Prairie last week.
Jerrod Sims and Darrian Hayes both scored three times each as the Panthers finished with 289 yards of total offense.
“It all starts up front,” the Bobcat coach said. “We aren’t that big but ouyr guys are strong and quick.
“We want to stop their running game and we want to move the ball,” the coach said.
