The Eunice Bobcats rolled to a 27-7 win over Iota in the Joe Nagata Memorial jamboree on a relatively dry field.
The elements will be a lot different Friday night as the remnants of Hurricane Harvey soaked the Bobcat Field grass all week.
EHS head coach Paul Trosclair said the wet conditions could impact both teams.
“I think ball handling is the number one issue when you are playing on a field like that,” the coach said. “It will come down to who makes the lease amount of mistakes because the conditions will not be great.”
Against the Bulldogs in the jamboree, Trevin Ceaser scored on a four-yard run on the game’s opening drive, but Iota answered to tie the score.
A Tyler Darbonne interception helped the Bobcats score again before halftime as Jadon Brasseaux connected with Jordan Ledet for a 47-yard touchdown.
Brasseaux and Ledet connected again for a 10-yard touchdown and Avery Lee finished the night with a 3-yard scoring run.
“Overall I think we played pretty well in the jamboree,” Trosclair said. “As a team we improved from the scrimmage,” the coach said. “Obviously we still need to get better because our schedule is so tough.”
Brasseaux completed 11-of-13 passes for 178 yards with Ledet finishing with 119 yards receiving.
Lee led the Bobcats rushing with 38 yards on eight carries, while Ceaser had 33 yards on six carries.
In the St. Landry Parish Jamboree, Opelousas High fell 8-0 to the Northwest Raiders.
Opelousas had six fumbles and the Raiders took advantage of a low punt snap in Tiger territory as NWHS quarterback Montez Sam scored on a 43-yard run and then threw for the two-point conversion.
Northwest kept OHS from scoring when the Raiders intercepted quarterback Quincy Ledet on the goal line on fourth down late in the game.
The Raiders rushed for 67 yards, highlighted by the long Sam touchdown run.
OHS passed for 58 yards (5-of-9), but struggled running the ball as the Tigers gained just two yards on 12 carries.
“They have lots of speed on offense,” Trosclair said of OHS. “They like to blitz on defense.
“We will need to make the in-game adjustments against that kind of defense.”
Veteran coach Doug Guillory is in his first season at OHS and it hoping to turn the Tiger program around after over a decade of struggling seasons.
“Doug has his team fired up and motivated,” Trosclair said. “They have more numbers and players with some talent.
“I think is should be a good game.”
Last year, Eunice defeated OHS 34-6 but later had to forfeit the win because of an ineligible player.
