The Bobcats have won two straight in district and are hoping to stay in the playoff hunt with a road win over Mamou Friday.
“We are fighting to get to .500,” Eunice head coach Paul Trosclair said. “We are getting better each week.”
The Bobcats (3-4 overall, 2-2 in District 5-3A) opened the season with a 24-0 win over Opelousas, but then lost four straight to Jennings (26-10), Rayne (42-10), Crowley (39-0) and Church Point (28-17).
Eunice rebounded with district wins over Port Barre (47-0) and Pine Prairie (27-13) and Trosclair is hoping his team can grab another win as the Bobcats visit Mamou.
“I am proud of the way the guys responded against Pine Prairie,” he said. “We had a lead and the Panthers came back and tied it.
“We didn’t panic and we answered with two touchdowns to put the game away.”
Mamou (1-6, 1-3) broke a two-year losing streak with a 15-14 district win over Port Barre.
“Mamou is a spread offense team,” Trosclair said. “They want to hit on big plays.
Their quarterback (Thomas Atkins) does a lot,” the coach said.
Last week in the 45-0 loss to Crowley, Atkins completed 7-of-15 passes for 118 yards and gained 82 yards on 24 carries.
The Green Demons opened the season with losses to Oberlin (28-12), Basile (16-14) and St. Edmund (55-18) before the win over the Red Devils.
Mamou has lost three straight district games to Iota (54-12), Pine Prairie (42-8) and Crowley.
The Gents finished with 318 yards on the ground in the win over Mamou.
“We have to execute on offense,” Trosclair said. “We had some good drives and ran the ball well.
“Our defense did well to hold them down.”
In other district games, Church Point (5-1, 4-0) entertains Crowley (4-3, 2-2); Iota (5-2, 2-2) plays host to Port Barre (0-7, 0-4) and Northwest (5-2, 3-1) entertains Pine Prairie (3-4, 2-2).
