Even after a three-game losing streak, it is not time to panic for the Eunice High Bobcats, according to head coach Paul Trosclair.
Eunice (1-3, 0-1 in District 5-3A) opened the season with a 24-0 win over Opelousas High, but the Bobcats then lost to Jenning (26-10), Rayne (42-10 and Crowley (39-0).
“When you lose, you have to be careful about building a losing mentality,” Trosclair said. “But we feel like we can put a winning streak together – it is time to get it started.”
The Bobcats travel to rival Church Point (2-1, 1-0) in a key district game.
“We still have a lot of season left and we can still make the playoffs,” Trosclair said. “We are looking to build some momentum and get back into the district race.”
“We are not the same team we saw in the spring mainly because of all the injuries,” Trosclair said.
“But we are making mental mistakes that we shouldn’t be making even with the younger guys on the field.
“We don’t normally have punts blocked,” he said. “We usually stop teams on a third down and 24 yards to go.
Trosclair said his team is still playing hard, but execution is crucial for his team to be successful.
“We are close, but we keep making mistakes that cost us,” Trosclair said.
“Things are going to go bad in the game and you to move on to the next play,” the coach said.
We have let things get to us a little bit.”
After their first game scheduled against Jennings was cancelled because of Hurricane Harvey, the Bears then rolled to a 41-7 win over Abbeville.
Church Point then lost to Kaplan (23-6) before opening district play with a 51-12 romp over Pine Prairie.
“They run the ball extremely well and their execution is great,” Trosclair said of the Bears. “They play real hard on defense.”
Rodney Dupuis is leading the Bears with 457 yards on 47 carries with four touchdowns.
Breelyn Jones has completed 7-of-15 for 134 yards in the Bears’ run dominated offense.
Jones had gained 127 yards on 26 carries with three touchdowns, while Gavin Richard (27-199, TD) and Trey Babineaux (7-111, 2 TD) are also threats to break long runs.
Eunice earned a 21-14 win over Church Point last year.
